Importance of the Correct Size for a New Air Conditioner
It is extremely important to install the correct size of the air conditioner at your home. If the system is too small, the air conditioner will not be able to cool the house. When the days are extremely hot, in the middle of summer, the air conditioner will run constantly. Not only will your home not be cool, but the air conditioner will be experiencing a lot of wear and tear.
One of the functions of an air conditioner is to remove moisture from the air. Moisture holds heat, so removing water from the air will make you feel cooler. That is, a home that is 75 degrees with high humidity will feel hotter than a home that is 75 degrees with low humidity. The reason that this is so important is that an air conditioner that has too many tons for the square footage will not run long enough to remove the moisture from the air. The house will remain with high humidity and will feel warmer than a home with the same temperature and lower humidity.
If you happen to have a slightly oversized system you can purchase a dehumidifier to help remove the moisture. An alternative is to set the temperature a few degrees lower than you want and let it run for an extended time. When the equipment cycles off, then raise the temperature back to where you prefer it. The extended run time will allow additional moisture to be removed from your home. This is a problem that can be eliminated by purchasing the right size of the air conditioner. If you purchase an air conditioner that is too big, you will also be using more electricity.
